Artist Statement

I wasn’t born on a mountaintop in Tennessee, but I was lucky enough to be born and raised on Cape Ann in Massachusetts, where artists, including giants like Marsden Hartley and Milton Avery, have thrived in the salt air and fantastic light for generations.

I like to do things that make time fly, things like reading a good novel, or going to a piano recital, or starting a new painting or drawing.

This website is a place where I can show examples of what I have loved doing for more than twenty five years. At  Northeastern University, I studied English but was also drawn to visual arts courses, studying art history and drawing with Robert Wells. At the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, I studied drawing with Leila Rosenthal. I took painting workshops with Ed Carson at the Rockport Art Association. Looking at great paintings is inspirational. Seeing a Jasper Johns target, or a Cy Twombly  freely-scribbled myth canvas, or a small quiet Giorgio Morandi still life makes me want to go home and get to work.
